de Young Musuem New Generations, Student Showcase, call for San Francisco Bay Area students (University or Continuing Education): Matter!

Public Programs at the de Young Museum invites San Francisco Bay Area students (University or Continuing Education) to submit proposals of visual art, film, music, or performance art, for “Friday Nights at the de Young” for display at the museum on Friday, April 20, 2012. Members of the de Young Museum’s New Generations Student and Faculty Advisory Committee will jury the proposals.

Theme: This year’s theme of the New Generations: Student Showcase is a call to action: Matter!

Think of it as a one-word manifesto: Matter!

Matter! Is the stuff of our lives, the goods that surround us, the fibers we wear, and the atoms of which our bodies are formed. Artists and designers have, in recent years, called for a return to Matter!, new investigations of material culture, a re-invigoration of distinctly handmade objects and insistent materiality. In an age characterized by post-studio art, others might argue that what matters most today is something immaterial, something social, an artistic form of anti-matter!

Matter! is a serious call for your creative contributions. Weigh in with your own submissions of work to be considered by our jury of art professionals.

Deadline March 1st, 2012

From their website: Founded in 2001, the goal of the Rhizome Commissions Program is to support emerging artists by providing grants for the creation of significant works of new media art. By new media art, we mean projects that creatively engage new and networked technologies and works that reflect on the broader social and political impact of these tools and media in a variety of forms. Rhizome defines emerging artist as artists who exhibit great potential yet are not fully recognized within their field. Commissioned works can take the final form of web-based works, works that engage mobile platforms, performance, video, installation or sound art. Projects can be made for the context of the gallery, the public, the web or networked devices. Rhizome Commissions awards generally range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Rhizome Commissions 2012-2013: Call for Proposals This year, Rhizome is placing a specific focus on projects geared that address social issues and/or promote individual advancement through education or participation. Our focus is not restricted to this theme, but it is a priority.

Rhizome will award ten grants: eight grants will be determined by a jury of experts in the field, and two will be determined by Rhizome’s membership through an open vote.

The Sustainable Arts Foundation is a non-profit foundation supporting individual artists and writers with families. Their mission is to provide financial awards to parents pursuing creative work. Specifically, the applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18 years of age. They welcome applicants from anywhere, but will give some preference to residents of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Too often, creative impulses are set aside to meet the wonderful, but pressing, demands of raising a family. The foundation’s goal is to encourage parents to continue pursuing their creative passion, and to rekindle it in those who may have let it slide.

Awards: Sustainable Arts Foundation Visual Arts Award: $6,000

Printmaking offers a rich menu of opportunities for experimentation, imagination and innovation. While the core techniques of the medium are centuries old, methods are constantly evolving as artists explore boundless possibilities for creative expression.

This exhibition seeks recent prints in which concept and technique come into balance to create works of art.

The Creative Arts Workshop (CAW), located in New Haven, Connecticut, announces a call for printmakers for their International Juried Show ‘Boundless’, with Ann Coffin, Director of the International Print Center, New York, as juror. Two entries will be awarded a joint exhibition in 2013. All entries will be entered into an online gallery, on the CAW website.

Open to all original artists’ prints, including three-dimensional and installation work. If selected, work must be sent ready for display – CAW will not mount or frame work. Work must be able to pass through a doorway measuring 80 by 40 inches; no piece may exceed a weight of 75 pounds. If framed, please indicate glass or plexiglass on back. Exceptions to any of these requirements must be justified in writing at the time of entry. Please indicate any particular needs for display and handling of each entry.

Artists are responsible for paying shipping costs, including any insurance, with the carrier of their choice to and from CAW.

Deadline: February 20th, 2012

Art Job Opportunity, Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington: Ceramics Faculty

Deadline: March 5th, 2012

The Evergreen State College seeks a versatile and broadly trained faculty colleague to teach Ceramics-based art forms and three-dimensional art in a variety of interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate level. Candidates must be committed to teaching in a liberal arts context, and must have clear expertise and ability to teach Ceramics from technical, conceptual, and cultural perspectives, as an art form and as a creative and responsive means to address the material world, for both art and non-art students, in diverse teaching and learning situations.

Candidates must be able to teach ceramics concepts, skills and processes to support a range of ceramics-based forms of expression, including functional ceramics, ceramic sculpture, mixed media, and emerging art forms. Preference will be given to candidates who have significant experience with and the ability to teach an additional 3D art medium. Candidates must be prepared to teach drawing and three-dimensional design fundamentals, as well as visual literacy, art history, and broader cultural contexts relative to Ceramics. Further, candidates must be able to speak and write effectively about their own work and that of others, and must be prepared to actively support students to develop critical thinking, writing, and assessment skills. Finally, they must be prepared to offer critical support to students pursuing work in a range of 2D and 3D media.

Evergreen organizes its curriculum through coordinated interdisciplinary studies (rather than through departments and courses). Team-taught interdisciplinary “programs” occupy students full time, over multiple quarters. Faculty on teaching teams enjoy a high degree of freedom to determine the subject matter, emphases, pace, classroom strategies and modes of evaluation in these programs. In some years, faculty teach students working close to their own discipline at a variety of experience levels; in other years they join faculty from diverse disciplines to develop a theme-based curriculum. In keeping with this teaching and learning model, ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate engagement with one or more disciplines outside of the visual arts and in different social, cultural, or environmental arenas, through creative work, teaching, or research. We encourage those who have had experience with students from underrepresented populations to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

M.F.A. degree;

Demonstrated experience teaching ceramic arts at the college level;

Experience teaching three-dimensional art forms and design;

The ability to work effectively with students on writing; and

Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching in an interdisciplinary context.

In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to advise and mentor students and participate in Evergreen’s system of shared governance. Through their participation in shared governance, faculty play a significant role in most aspects of how the college is run.
