Call for Submissions, Corcoran College of Art + Design, Washington DC: Art & Technology Exhibition

Deadline: June 8th, 2012

Description: Gallery 31 of the Corcoran College of Art + Design is pleased to announce the call for submissions for its new show dedicated to art and technology to be displayed from 2012-08-06 through 2012-09-02. The exhibition is aiming to explore the phenomenon of innovative technologies in relation to contemporary art (or: the relation of contemporary art to new technologies). Although the emphasis will be on exploring the art practices when a machine makes a vast amount of work, artists working in a way that opposes technology may also apply (we are interested in yarn bombing etc) This call seeks works addressing the recent tendency of personal fabrication of things, labs and the emergence of do-it-yourself communities.

The show is curated by the Corcoran College of Art + Design’s Department of College Exhibitions

Submission Guidelines:
- Please log on to www.corcoran.edu/content/call-entries
- Select “Call For Entry: Art and Technology Exhibition” from the Exhibition Title drop-down menu
- All fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required for submission
- Maximum of 3 submissions
- You may submit up to three images as JPEGS (resolution72 dpi), not to exceed one megabyte. Diptych, triptych, and works in a series will be accepted and may be considered one submission.
- Please be specific with the medium; for example, do not write “mixed media” or “painting”. Identify exactly what materials you used to create your piece, for example “monoprint, graphite, ink on paper” or “acrylic on canvas”.
- Label images as follows: Lastname_firstname_title_size_medium.jpg
i.e. Doe_Jane_untitled_30x42_Oil on Canvas_jpg

GALLERY 31 is the Corcoran’s dedicated exhibition space for the Corcoran College of Art + Design. The space hosts exhibitions by the Corcoran’s students, alumni, faculty, and visiting artists. The name was selected by the students, referring to the area’s previous designation as “Room 31” in original Corcoran plans. Located at the New York Avenue entrance of the Corcoran, Gallery 31 is open during Gallery hours and is free to the public.

Questions: For more information, please email them at collegexhibitions@corcoran.org

Corcoran College of Art + Design is the only college of art and design in the museum- and college-rich environment of Washington, D.C. It is one of the only art schools in the country fully integrated with a world-class museum. The Corcoran’s vibrant and active community includes more than 600 degree students pursuing a wide range of associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in the visual arts. http://www.corcoran.edu/

Annual Deadline: December 1st

Twenty artists are selected every year. Each receives a $2000 stipend toward residency expenses. The selection is made by the Sculpture Space Review Committee and a rotating guest panelist.

Artists are notified in March of the panel’s decision. Primary criteria are quality, originality, and potential for growth. Applications must be received by December 1st of each year. Free housing and $100 transportation stipend are available for New York State artists.

Artists are requested to credit/acknowledge Sculpture Space when the work that they make here is subsequently exhibited or published, and to provide excellent images of their work for our Web site, archives and publications.

Website link: http://www.sculpturespace.org/residency-program/

The Residency: Residencies are scheduled between September and August, excluding December, with no more than four artists in residency at one time. Artists are expected to stay for a full two months. Residents have access to the studio 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are responsible for their own materials, specialized tools, fees for work done outside the premises, and for an assistant, should they require one. Residents typically spend approximately $1000 per month on materials and expenses. A basic command of the English language is necessary. Bicycles are provided, and a shared car is available for local travel.

Sculpture Space’s Studio Manager will provide an introductory orientation session, will act as a liaison with suppliers, and can provide technical assistance as needed. Sculpture Space facilities and grounds can accommodate a great variety of projects, both in terms of materials and scale. The City of Utica is supportive of community-based site-specific work. The public is invited to quarterly work-in-progress receptions; other visits occur by appointment.

The Studio: The studio is located in downtown Utica, New York, in proximity to light industry and various fabrication shops. The facility consists of 5,000 square feet of open studio, and two 400 square foot private studios for special projects. The space is outfitted with concrete floors, a two ton system of traveling hoists, and extra wide overhead doors. The studio has wireless access, and the Artists Office has DSL and a G4 computer; artists may borrow available digital equipment. The 3 acres of land that surround the building can supplement indoor studio space in the summer. An outdoor work pad is equipped with a 50′ monorail hoist.Sculpture Space is a founding member of the New York State Artists Workspace Consortium, and the Alliance of Artists’ Communities.

The program has helped advance the careers of over 400 national and international artists since 1976. Artists-in-residence have access to specialized resources available in the Mohawk Valley to make sculpture on a scale which they otherwise might not afford, in a supportive environment conducive to experimentation. Work that is made and first seen in Utica is often exhibited in galleries, museums and sculpture parks worldwide.

Housing: Artists live in a newly renovated Sculpture Space-owned apartment located one block from the studio with shared fully-equipped kitchen, bathrooms and laundry. Non-New York State artists are assessed a nominal rent. Artists are responsible for their own meals. No pets are allowed in the studio or the artists’ apartment.
