From their call: At Kala, Artists-In-Residence (AIRs) work in a productive and professional communal studio alongside other working artists. It is a self-driven experience and artists are expected to respect the equipment, the working environment of the studio, and bring their own consumable supplies (paper and ink). Kala’s print studio and electronic media center are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year and do not close. Resident artists have their own keys and are welcome to use the studio whenever they choose as long as it abides by the terms of their contract.

To begin, artists accepted into the AIR program are scheduled for a 1, 2, or 3 month, full time or part time contract. Each residency begins with an orientation to the studio and electronic media center and overview of the program. In addition to keys, all artists receive their own onsite storage, a Kala handbook, and inclusion in Kala community exhibitions and events. And while in residence, all Kala artists receive a 20% discount on an unlimited number of classes.

Artists interested in becoming a part of the Kala community through the Artist-In-Residence program can apply online at kala.slideroom.com. Artists may apply for 1-, 2-, or 3-month residencies, and must specify the desired residency length in the application. Please review our contracts rates to determine what option works best for you. 6-month residencies are available to continuing and returning Artists-in-Residence who have completed a 3 month residency.

Applications are reviewed three times per year: March 15th, July 15th, and October 15th. Applications are reviewed by Kala’s AIR Program Manager and Directors in consultation with Kala’s print studio and media center managers. We are looking for existing technical knowledge and the ability to work independently on Kala’s specialized equipment along with artistic and conceptual strength. Applicants will find out if they have been accepted approximately two weeks after the application deadline. Kala’s Studio Managers sometimes require the artist to complete certain classes or technical tutorials before beginning the residency. If this is the case, the artist is given a list of the classes/tutorials required. At this point the artist may accept or reject the offer of a residency.

We will do our best to make suggestions and find referrals, but the Bay Area can be expensive and sometimes the housing market can be difficult.
