Camilo José Vergara began photographing art in poor urban areas on the east coast and midwest in the 1970s. One of the most prevalent figures in the artworks he documented was the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr in his series MLK Folk Murals. Some mural artists are unknown, others cited.
