The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center (VT), Call for Entries: SculptFest 2019 – Changes

Deadline: June 28th, 2019

From their call: The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites artists to submit proposals for SculptFest2019, September 7th – October 20th, 2019. The theme for this year’s outdoor exhibition is Changes, guest curated by Bill Wolff, Assistant Professor and Head of the Sculpture area at Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Few things, if any, are constant. Reflection on the past, contemplation of the inexorable transition to the future and the transitory nature of the present are part of daily life and have been the bread and butter of many artists.

Rutland, the quarries, the former manufacturing facilities of the Vermont Marble Company and the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center itself are no exceptions. Change is evident throughout the properties surrounding the vibrant activity in and around the CSSC: small trees grow through old railway lines, unused buildings and industrial equipment slowly become part of the landscape, or are recalled into service. Signs of seasonal change are evident in the landscapes around Rutland, changes in population and demographics are evident in the city itself and the buildings. Cultural change is evident across the land. We change from day to day and from year to year.

Artists responding are encouraged to think across and between creative disciplines and media, and to pursue metaphors connecting small-scale changes with social, historical, natural and geologic change, and of course, the CSSC and its grounds.

We invite sculptors, installation artists, sound artists, video artists, web-based artists, performance based visual artists, multimedia and other artists to submit work to this call.
