The University of San Francisco (CA), Request for Proposals: Outdoor Sculpture for Meditation Garden
Deadline: June 30th, 2018, 11:59pm PST
The University of San Francisco (USF) seeks a contemporary outdoor sculpture to anchor a meditation garden and reflection space atop Lone Mountain campus in San Francisco, California (on Turk Boulevard, between Masonic and Parker Avenues) at the top of the Spanish Steps. We will consider original site-specific as well as pre-existing sculpture that is substantial in scale and offers an interpretation of the themes of love, social justice, and community, and takes advantage of the panorama the site offers. Abstract works are welcome.
The sculpture should re-imagine the symbolism of the Sacred Heart for a contemporary and multi-religious audience with an emphasis on social justice, compassion for the suffering, and solidarity with marginalized communities. The sacred heart is an old and new symbol recognizing USF’s commitment to “educating minds and hearts to change the world,” and one reside within a meditation garden that invites students, visitors, and community members to pause and reflect while enjoying expansive views of the City and University of San Francisco.
