Walker Art Center (MN), International/National Call for Applicants: Interdisciplinary Fellow, Performing Arts

Deadline: May 13th, 2018

From their call: This interdisciplinary fellowship provides in-depth training for emerging curators and scholars interested in the rise of interdisciplinary innovation and performance-based contemporary practice in museums and art centers.

Providing solid experience in both practical and theoretical aspects of this relatively new field, this fellowship supports the Walker’s goal to encourage greater leadership in this area, and to develop a new generation of curatorial and scholarly talent engaged with the challenges and evolving standards for commissioning, documenting, archiving, developing and presenting interdisciplinary work across gallery, stage, and site.

The Interdisciplinary Fellow (Performing Arts) will work closely with the Walker’s senior project management and programming staff in Performing Arts while interfacing regularly with Visual Arts curators/staff, the Interdisciplinary Fellow (Visual Arts), and invited artists. In particular, the Fellow will gain direct experience and provide assistance in production, with emphasis placed upon the curating, developing, and managing of hybrid works, and the conceptual, technical, spatial, financial, developmental/rehearsal, audience/outreach, and other concerns required for the successful realization of these projects. The Fellow will also help plan for and create scholarly and contextual material that documents and reflects on these works and the process of their making, both for the field and for general audiences. This position reports to William and Nadine McGuire Director and the Senior Curator, Performing Arts.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Full-time with one-day a week release, exempt; from July 2018 – December 2019
  • $35,000/year with excellent benefits package, Walker membership and discounts, and the opportunity to work alongside talented individuals as well as support some remarkable artists, events, and programming.

Please note: International candidates must secure at their own expense and be in possession of a valid US work visa for entire Fellowship duration.

Qualified Applicants Have:

Pre-doctoral fellowship: M.A. degree in art history, museum studies, performance studies, or a related field (e.g. history, cultural studies, curatorial studies, arts administration).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and familiarity with modern and contemporary performing and visual art required; foreign language skills (written and verbal) are desirable.
  • Diverse backgrounds and/or studies are strongly encouraged. In the Walker’s terms, diversity refers to a wide spectrum of people of color, people with disabilities, age, gender, and other classifications.
